Warning: Rick & Morty is borderline TV-14 and TV-MA. If you are younger than 14 years of age, the author does not recommend reading this post as it is about a show for mature audiences only.

Ok so it's been a while since I've done an entertainment post. (Well not really since I just wrote about WandaVision) But you know what I mean.

So I logged into HBO Max to see what exciting content awaited me. The result? Rick and Morty.

In case you don't know:

Rick and Morty is a television show on Adult Swim about a genius grandfather who perfected interdimensional travel (Rick) and his awkward teenage grandson (Morty) who go on zany adventures all over the multiverse. On the run from the galactic governments, dangerous fugitives, and even themselves.

So what do I like about it?

Amazing Characters

Other than the deuteragonists, Rick and Morty is supported by a large array of characters for what the scenario calls for. Often times, the characters are able to blend in so seamlessly that you can forget that they're only a small part of the wider story at hand.

An example of this is Season 2, Episode 4, (Total Rickall) where the main characters' family find themselves swarmed with alien parasites masquerading as relatives and friends. Even though the characters involved are meant to be one-off figures who would be dead by the end of the episode, you get drawn to them because they are still conceptualized out as full characters.

Eccentric Plots

Each episode of Rick and Morty is almost self-contained. With few repercussions that can be seen moving from episode-to-episode, the show is truly an icon upon itself with hilarious stories and quests to propel the show going.

This includes family stories as well. Rick and Morty's family is not the most conventional, and unlike other shows where they prove that family will always come through. This is the exact opposite. Both of the parents (Beth and Jerry) have horrible trust issues and only stayed together out of wedlock following the birth of the eldest child.

Of course that isn't saying about the crazy interdimensional adventures the deuteragonists participate in. The list of insane activities they have been involved in is very long. So here is a short list of some of the (mis)deeds they have done.

  • Stopped time in order to not clean up the family's home.
  • Raising/nurturing an entire civilization in a week.
  • The main character (Rick) turning into a pickle then breaking into a Russian facility.

As you can see, Rick and Morty definitely has some interesting stories, and the execution style makes the show amazing to watch.

Conclusion

Rick and Morty is an amazing television show with phenomenal plots and catchy characters. While an external observer may be mortified by some of the characters' actions, everything comes around in perspective and you can see why the show has been etched into pop culture.
